Digital trends in the English classroom

Nowadays, technology has changed the way we learn and teach, as well as many other aspects of our lives. In education, technology has brought a lot of new trends which are used by teachers at schools these days, such as the following ones:

  • Flipped learning: students learn something at home (through videos, readings, etc.), and then go into the classroom to put it into practice, share it with their classmates, etc.

  • Gamification: students learn through game-like activities, which enables more fun and engagement.

  • Social media: students can interact, learn and share their knowledge in a virtual way. It enables the creation of virtual communities including students, teachers, families… The learning process can go beyond the classroom setting, as they can interact with other students around the world, for instance.

As English teachers, there are a lot of technological tools which we can take advantage of. Below you will find my personal top 5 tools and a brief justification of each one by giving some examples of language learning situations they could fit in. You will also find some challenges that we may find as teachers when using them in the classroom.
