FL school

The school where I am doing my internship is FL school.

Where is it located?

It's placed in Sant Boi de Llobregat, a city in the outskirts of Barcelona where 82.402 citizens (INE, 2016) live. Its name is due to the fact that it's located in the Llobregat river delta.

Main characteristics

It is a charter school that was created on 1974, driven by a group of parents and professionals in education in order to meet the educational needs of some families in that area.

Now it has become a huge school. They have an educational offer that covers the levels of pre-school, elementary education, secondary education and batxillerat. The school has 3 lines in each compulsory educational level, so there a lot of students on it. That's why their facilities are also enormous.

It's an inclusive school, where kids with different characteristics are together in the classrooms. Disabilities or disorders are not a handicap to learn there together with other same-age students.

The school defines its identitary items as the following ones:

- Plurilingualism (you'll find more information about it on the next section about languages).

- Integration of technology in the educational process, as all classrooms have a PDI, they use iPads in different subjects, they do robotics during all the compulsory education and batxillerat, the school has a 3D printer and a TV set and from first secondary course, every student has his or her own laptop.

- Students' personal development. The school has a POID (Pedagogical Orientation and Intervention Department) which organises different programmes about individualised attention for students and pedagogical, academical and personal orientation like a parents' school, tutoring programmes, etc.

- Green school since 2003. The school has natural area in which they also have a vegetable garden and a pond.

- Innovation. They use different innovative methodologies like PBL (Project Based Learning), flipped classrooms or Science Bits (which is a new and practical way to teach Science).

- Sports. The school counts with a Sports School which organises different activities together with the school.

- The school also has a musical initiation school which offers students different musical modalities.

Languages

It's a Catalan school, who ensures the learning of the Catalan culture and traditions. But despite that, it's a plurilingual school where a lot of languages are taught apart from Catalan, which are Spanish, English, Chinese, French and German. English and Chinese are compulsory during pre-school, because they consider that it's when kids retain more the inputs they get. Then, in elementary education, English continues being compulsory, but Chinese becomes optional. German and French are taught from 5th grade on, and students can choose between them.

Families and students

As I've said before, it's an inclusive school, so in each classroom you can find really different students. If their parents decide it, they can be there in an ordinary class instead of going to a special school.

Regarding social status, as it's a charter school where families have to pay for their children's education, most of the students belong to a mid-high class, although the mid class is the most common one. But it's really difficult to find students from a low-class.
